Simulation of Over-voltages Caused by Lightning Intruding Waves in Distribution System of Substation

Abstract

Lightning intruding waves is one of the main causes that damage the insulation of the high voltage apparatus in substations, and it always damage the electric equipments in substations and power stations. The paper does calculations on the over-voltage caused in this situation. At the same time, the influence of lightning current, capacitances, grounding resistance and outlet circuitries is took into account. The conclusion is that the over-voltage will climb if lightning current and grounding resistance rise. But the capacitances and outlet circuitries can restrain the over-voltage. When the breaker is far from the bus and the gradient of lightning waves is great, it may cause over-voltage at the foreside of the breaker. When lightning waves come to both sides of the breaker, the over-voltage may be higher and can cause more harm.
