Special Issue on “Semantic Web and Data Integration”
The last decade has witnessed an exponential growth in the amount of data available on the World Wide Web. The Web is replete with a myriad of data sources, but the decentralized nature of data generation and management systems, however, has resulted in an incongruous variety of diverse database implementations, making access to and aggregation of data across different data sources very difficult. Accessing data from multiple heterogeneous data sources entails dealing with different data models, different schemas and different query languages and communication protocols. The vision of Semantic Web vision from the World Wide Web Consortium is to extend the current Web, so that "information is given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation." In the Semantic Web, data are defined and linked in a way that enables its use for more effective discovery, automation, integration, and re-use across various applications. The main aim of this special issue on "Semantic Web and Data Integration" is to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences concerning theoretical, technical, practical research & issues on the use of semantic web technologies for heterogeneous data integration.

Contributions on all areas of semantic web based heterogeneous data integration but not limited to the below defined topics are invited for publication in this special issue. * Principles and applications of Semantic Web * Lessons learned and/or evaluations of Semantic Web applications * Analysis and evaluation of large-scale semantic data repositories * Semantic Web technologies for cooperation and collaboration * Interoperability * Tool support for developing and deploying Semantic Web applications * Role of ontologies in data integration and data exchange * Ontology mapping, merging and alignment * Management of incomplete information on the Semantic Web * Probabilistic data and query answering * Storage schemas optimized for RDF data * Semantic-aware search engines * Entity identification on the Semantic Web * Publishing relational data on the Semantic Web * Semantic annotation * Query languages for RDF and the Semantic Web * Provenance models for query languages and RDFS/OWL programs * Access control specification languages and enforcement strategies for Semantic Web data * Efficient storage and querying of provenance data
