Characterization of Mechanical Properties of Postweld Heat-Treated Shielded Manual Metallic Arc Welded Rails

This paper describes a comparative study of the hardness characteristics, mechanical properties and microstructure of the shielded metallic arc welded rail steel joint before and after heat treatment. The study indicates that heat treated welded joint improved mechanical properties. Microstructural analysis carried out with the help of scanning electron microscope at three different regions of base, weldment and heat affected zone before and after heat treatment. Heat treated rails shows that the good ductility and strength .The base metal has bearing on the mechanical behavior exhibited by the post weld heat treated rails.
