FDTD Based EM Modeling and Analysis for Microwave Imaging of Buried Objects

Non Destructive Evaluation and identification of buried inhomogeneities are of great importance in geophysical, civil engineering, military and medical applications. The basis for the microwave imaging technique is the significant contrast in the dielectric material characteristics at the microwave frequencies.

In this paper, microwave imaging technique feasibility is studied by using Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method. It is applied to study the electromagnetic scattering and to investigate the presence and location of the buried object in a dielectric medium. The investigation considers the medium formed by a circular cylindrical plastic container filled with oil and a small highly reflecting object as a target.
