Improvement of Dynamic Performance of AGC under Open Market Scenario Employing TCPS and A.C-D.C Parallel Tie Line

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis on dynamic performance of two-area hydrothermal system interconnected via parallel A.C-D.C transmission links when subjected to parametric uncertainties. It also deals with the effect of Thyristor controlled phase shifter (TCPS) in series with the A.C tie-line in the presence of integral controller under open market scenario. In this paper area-1 consists of thermal power plant whereas area-2 consists of hydro power plant. The dc link is used as system interconnection in parallel with ac tie-line. The dc link is considered to be operating in constant current control mode and the power flow deviation through dc link is modeled based on frequency deviation at rectifier end. Open transmission access and the evolving of more socialized companies for generation, transmission and distribution affects the formulation of AGC problem. So the traditional AGC two-area system is modified to take into account the effect of bilateral contracts on the dynamics. It is possible to stabilize the system frequency and tie-line power oscillations by controlling the phase angle of TCPS which is expected to provide a new ancillary service for the future power systems. A control strategy using TCPS is proposed to provide active control of system frequency. Simulation results show that the dynamic performance of the system is greatly reduced by the proposed method.
