Application of Reliability Analysis in Expansion of Transmission System

In planning studies, the conventional approach for steady state contingency analysis is to test all contingencies sequentially for evaluating system performance and reliability. This analysis consists of simulating outages of one or more generating units and transmission lines to study their effects on bus voltage, generator MVAR outputs and line power flows. But new challenges and uncertainties came in the power sector after the deregulated process. To cope with the increasing uncertainties, new techniques are essential. Expansion of transmission line or equipment considering cost and reliability is a subject of continuing interest. Different mathematical tools have already been developed for this purpose. In this paper transmission line expansion has been selected considering reliability, effective utilization of line and loss. Single outages has been taken considering economic condition of a developing country. A five bus test system has been taken as an example. A generalized computer program has been developed.
