A Cost-Effective 3D Interaction Approach for Immersive Virtual Reality

One of the main factors that has impeded the proliferation of immersive virtual reality systems in mainstream society has been the price involved in setting up such systems. This paper presents the design of an inexpensive 6 degree-of-freedom optical tracking approach which is suitable for 3D interaction in an immersive head-mounted display virtual reality system, along with various design issues that have to be considered in setting up such an input system. The method described here involves the use of a camera in conjunction with computer vision software in order to track the position and orientation of fiducial markers. The user can interact with 3D content in the virtual environment by manipulating these physical markers in an area around the user.
