Link Quality Estimated TCP for Wireless Sensor Networks

The irregularity in quality of wireless communication links poses significant research challenges in wireless sensor network design. Dynamic network conditions and environmental factors make an on-line, selfadapted link quality estimation mechanism within sensor nodes a necessity for improving the network performance.

In this paper, a wireless rate-control technique has been presented, whose link characteristics are identified by variable link rate and bursty transmission error. This technique caches the packets selectively based on the wireless channel condition and the cached packets are retransmitted locally over the wireless links in case corruption loss is detected. Links between a sensor node and the gateway is taken into consideration. In addition, for effective adaptation to variable bandwidth, the window feedback is calculated based on the bandwidth–delay product estimation, and then this feedback information is conveyed on the receiver’s advertised window field in the acknowledgements returning to sensor source node. Simulation results prove the performance improvement.
